A commission is an unique oppertunity to collaborate on a new work and create something special. I have always viewed music as a communal and collective experience, so to create in partnership with others is a process I greatly enjoy. Personally, I believe some of my most meaningful work has come through these collobrative experiences.
To be commissioned to write a new work specifically for an ensemble, orchestra, instrumentalist or choir is a great honor as a composer. To be able to curate a work specifically for an group means the score will forever bear the name of the commisioning group. More importantly, the group will inevitably feel a deeper sense of connection to the music, knowing that it was written specifically for them. With this comes a sense of pride and ownership to perform the music in the most expressive way possible.
A commission would include a back-and-forth exchange of ideas with the commissioner and myself, with a work being created for a specific concert, theme or idea. Price can inevitably be a tricky discussion point. Depending on the scope of the project, this can vary significantly. A 3 minute work for SATB Choir and Piano will inevitably be priced differently to a 10-15 minute work for Orchestra and Chorus, and differently from a 5 minute solo Oboe and Electronics work.
